We shared the same work space although it was considered ‘my’ desk.  She got to work before me and every day she’d read the previous day’s Bible verse on a calendar I had brought to work.  When she finished reading it, she’d flip the page to the current day’s passage.  Sometimes we’d talk about the verse of the day.  It became a little tradition for us.

One day the page was unturned.  Here’s what happened next.

Hi, noticed your calendar flippin is slippin.  Yesterday’s date on the Bible calendar didn’t get switched this morning. What’s up, afraid of getting a major paper cut?

Just kidding!!! It was an interesting page to get stuck on though. Did you have any thoughts about it?

It’s funny, I didn’t read it.  Could you write it for me? I usually read those every day!

Glad to...here it is.

Text Box: Her Calendar Flippin was Slippin
Text Box: Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Psalm 51:7
"It is only when our sins have been washed in the blood of Christ that we appear white as snow in the eyes of God. No human ‘detergent’ of good works or clean thoughts can make us that white. Only Christ’s precious blood can do that, and it is only His blood that can continue to cleanse us from sin."

ya, I use that same idea in my life. For me, that means being honest with yourself. When people act in a way that may seem like they always have good intentions but really are just doing nice things for their own personal gain, and I mean in a material way, they are not being true to themselves (a case where I think cleansing would be needed). And when you are not true to yourself and to your higher power, whether it be God, or whoever the higher power may be (to encompass all people with their different beliefs), then there can be no cleansing from anything.

I really like that bible calendar, all the ideas for each day are things that anyone, whether they believe in God or not, or regardless of religion, could take and use in their own lives to be better people.

Thanks for discussing this with me. Some people like to talk sports; some chat about soaps...me, I like spiritual stuff. But I warn you, I can get carried away, so holler if you want me to slow down.

Ok, so using your example of someone doing a nice thing for the wrong reason, how do you see them getting this cleansing? I mean are there different ways of getting clean? Can someone pick and chose how to be cleaned like choosing their brand of laundry detergent?

And that brings up another question...do you think they’d need cleansing even if they didn’t recognize it?

I guess I mean that if someone is doing a nice thing for the wrong reason, they think they are clean but in actuality, they are not. I think that cleansing comes from total honesty and integrity. I think lots of people have a lot of different criteria for themselves as to whether or not they are "clean" or how they can be clean. I think some people can pick and choose how they want to be clean but what looks clean to one person, may not look clean to another. (kind of like my room as a kid!)

And in response to the other question, I think this world is FULL of people who could use a little cleaning and may not realize it.

Well I absolutely agree with your last point.  We try to convince ourselves of how clean we are when everyone else knows we’re dirty.

So, if I’m trying to be clean by being an honest man, a man of integrity, and I do something for the wrong motive and become unclean, what hope is there for me? I mean, if cleansing comes from ‘total honesty and integrity’ and I’m already less than total because I’m unclean, aren’t I in big trouble...what do I do to get clean?

Our Email Ends - A New Conversation Begins?

I actually stayed after work to finish my last comment to her and I was hoping to find something in my inbox the next morning when I came to work.  But like Old Mother Hubbard (the nursery rhyme not the pet food business), the inbox was bare.

We never spoke about that particular page again but now that I’ve shared the story with you, perhaps a new conversation will begin.  Here a few questions you might be asking yourself…

1. What’s this ‘blood of Christ’ thing?

2. Why do I have to be ‘white as snow’ in God’s eyes?

3. Is there a downside for being unclean?

4. Can’t a person satisfy God by trying their best?

Or maybe you’ve got a comment about something one of us wrote.  We’d love to hear from you and you can reach us as simply as clicking on the snowflakes.

Oval: I appreciated her openness to finding wisdom in the Bible.
